Sony Goes Ultra-Wide with FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens

Long awaited and highly anticipated, Sony has finally released an ultra-wide-angle prime lens for its full-frame mirrorless cameras: the FE 20mm f/1.8 G. While this company’s standard wides and normal-length lenses have been a focus and priority over the years, the ultra-wide sector has been relegated to zoom lenses—until now. With this new 20mm f/1.8, though, a more compact and focused design gives photographers and videographers a faster option, with advanced optics and intuitive handling, for wide-angle shooting.

This 20mm f/1.8 lens is Sony’s first full-frame prime lens that is wider than 24mm and, as such, is its first especially compact ultra-wide lens that features a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. This faster, sleeker design greatly benefits astrophotographers, as well as hikers, landscape photographers, and even architecture and interior photographers because it’s a highly nimble and flexible lens for various scenarios. In terms of optics, a pair of Advanced Aspherical elements help to control spherical aberrations and distortion to achieve high sharpness, while a trio of ED elements suppresses chromatic aberrations for notable color accuracy. A Nano AR coating also reduces flare for color consistency when working in bright and backlit conditions.
