Few endeavors can be as rewarding for photographers as a long-term project. At the same time, crafting a body of work that holds up on an individual and collective level is no small feat. Add the element of time and you are looking at a serious labor of love. That is exactly what my collaboration with B&H Podcast producer John Harris for the portrait series “What is Photography?” became. Taking more than two years to complete, the project consists of 81 portraits, each paired with its sitter’s reflection on the role of photography in their lives. What follows are some of the lessons we learned from this undertaking of value to any long-term photography project.

Establishing Boundaries

It started as a reversal. Direct a camera back at the photography community. Who would it show? How would they appear? We cast our net wide: artists, curators, theorists, editors, printers, activists, archivists, engineers, students, educators—anyone who used photography in a way that inspired us. The gesture begged a question that ended up becoming our calling card throughout: What is photography?
