For an upcoming segment on the B&H Photography Podcast, I was given a Leica Q2 Monochrom Digital Camera to sample for a few weeks. Since Macro Week at B&H is upon us and the Q2 has a sublime and simple macro mode, I produced a short series of black-and-white images using its macro mode.
While I understand that this system is not a true 1:1 macro lens and that the digital crop (35mm, 50mm, 75mm) on the Q2 is not an optical zoom system, its f/1.7 maximum aperture and gorgeous 47.3MP monochrome-only sensor creates beautiful, dynamic, shallow-depth-of-field, close-up images. There is no getting around it. Whether using its accurate autofocus system or manual focus with focus peaking as an aid, the “on-the-go” simplicity with which you can create close-up images cannot be overlooked.
