Sony recently rolled out a new system update for the PlayStation 5 that includes several new UX features, customization options, and added enhancements such as 3D Audio for built-in TV speakers. Best of all, the new update includes support for compatible M.2 SSDs, so users can finally expand their PS5’s base storage.
According to Sony, compatible SSDs must be at least PCIe Gen 4.0 and have a minimum storage capacity of 250GB. Additionally, installed SSDs need to have some kind of passive cooling system and, because of the limited available space, they must be less than 11.25mm (0.442in)—heatsink included. To take some of the confusion and guesswork out of searching for a compatible M.2 SSD, we’ve put together a list of some of your best options, down below.
But first, be sure to check out Sony’s video on how to install your new M.2 SSD in your PS5.
Seagate FireCuda 530
Seagate’s FireCuda 530 series is fully compatible with the PS5 and is available with or without a heatsink. For convenience’s sake, we recommend the model with a heatsink, since it’s one less thing over which to fuss. Currently, the FireCuda 530 comes in four storage options (500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB) that offer blazing-fast read speeds up to 7300 MB/s.
