Sony Unlocks DCI 4K and More with Massive FX3 & FX30 Firmware Updates

Already incredible compact cinema cameras, Sony's FX3 and FX30 just got even better. With the release of firmware version 3.0 for the full-frame FX3 and version 2.0 for the Super 35 FX30, there are a ton of new features for filmmakers to utilize. Included in this update is the ability to record in DCI 4K in a true 24.00 fps and anamorphic de-squeeze.

DCI 4K and True 24 fps Recording

Let's start with one of the coolest changes: the ability to choose DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) resolution. This feature has been on my wish list since the FX3 was released over two years ago and was noted again when I reviewed the FX30. In addition to this new resolution—available only in the XAVC S-I format at 240 Mb/s 10-bit 4:2:2—you will be able to select true 24.00 fps as your frame rate. This makes the FX3/FX30 much more sensible as B, C, or even D cameras on set that are using a VENICE 2, FX9, or FX6.

Now that I've had the chance to download the firmware on an FX3 and check out the actual menu, I have some notes on using the true 24 fps option. First off, ProRes RAW does not work at the moment. It seems that Atomos may need to develop a firmware update for the Ninja V, at least for full functionality. You also need to pop into S&Q Mode to access 48 fps if you want to shoot slow-motion video in a similar multiple.
